OurSame Electricals Limited was appointed to undertake the complete electrical installation for a modern house extension in South Shields. The project required a new dedicated consumer unit to serve the extension, providing additional capacity while avoiding the need to replace the existing consumer unit, which had limited spare ways available.

The installation included new power and lighting circuits throughout the extension, LED downlights, extractor fans and electric underfloor heating within the new bathroom. Every aspect of the installation was designed, installed and tested to the latest edition of BS 7671, ensuring the new extension integrated seamlessly with the existing property while providing the client with a safe, reliable and future proof electrical installation.

Project Brief

Our client was extending their home to create an additional living space and required a complete electrical installation that complemented the existing property while providing modern functionality and energy efficient lighting throughout.

Following an initial site visit, it was established that the existing consumer unit did not have sufficient capacity to accommodate the additional circuits. Rather than replacing an otherwise suitable consumer unit, a new dedicated consumer unit was installed specifically for the extension, providing a practical and cost effective solution. The scope of works included:

  • Installation of a dedicated consumer unit for the extension.
  • New socket ring circuit.
  • New LED downlighting throughout.
  • Extractor fan installation.
  • Electric underfloor heating installation.
  • Testing, inspection and certification.
  • Full client handover.

Project Challenges

One of the primary challenges of the project was integrating the new electrical installation with the existing property while working within the limitations of the original consumer unit. As the existing consumer unit had no spare ways for the additional final circuits, careful consideration was given to the most appropriate method of supplying the extension. A dedicated consumer unit was installed, allowing all new circuits to be grouped together while maintaining full compliance with current wiring regulations and providing simplified future maintenance.

Attention was also given to achieving a clean, modern finish throughout the extension. LED downlights were positioned to provide lighting across the new living areas, while the bathroom electrical installation incorporated suitably rated extractor ventilation and electric underfloor heating.

Throughout the project, cable routes and accessory locations were carefully planned alongside the building works to minimise disruption and achieve a neat, professional finish requiring minimal disruption to the existing property.

The Results

The completed installation provides the client with a modern electrical system perfectly suited to their newly extended home. The dedicated consumer unit offers ample capacity for future expansion while keeping the extension's electrical installation organised and easy to maintain.

Energy efficient LED lighting creates bright, evenly illuminated living spaces, while the electric underfloor heating delivers additional comfort within the bathroom.
