LED LIGHTING & EMERGENCY LIGHTING REFURBISHMENT

Commercial Maintenance • South Shields

Project Overview

Same Electricals Limited was appointed to undertake a complete lighting refurbishment at a local school during the six-week summer holiday shutdown.

The project involved replacing more than 300 existing light fittings with modern, energy-efficient LED alternatives, alongside the replacement of the emergency lighting throughout the school. Working to a strict programme, all works were required to be completed before staff and pupils returned for the start of the new academic year.

Through careful planning and coordination, the project was completed in just three and a half weeks, comfortably ahead of schedule and ready for handover before the school reopened.

Project Brief

The existing lighting installation had reached the end of its serviceable life and the school required a complete lighting upgrade to improve energy efficiency, reduce maintenance requirements, bring emergency lighting back in line with standards and modernise the electrical installation.

It would be impractical to undertake these works throughout the academic year so all works had to be undertaken during the six-week summer holiday period, leaving a limited window to complete the refurbishment before the building became occupied once again. The project included:

  • Replacement of over 300 light fittings.
  • Complete emergency lighting replacement.
  • Like-for-like replacement of all existing luminaires.
  • Installation of LED panel lights.
  • Installation of LED Scholar fittings within main hall using mobile scaffold towers.
  • Installation of LED battens.
  • Installation of LED bulkhead fittings.
  • Inspection, testing and certification
  • Final commissioning prior to handover

Project Challenges

One of the key challenges of this project was the strict completion deadline. With pupils returning at the end of the summer holidays, every aspect of the programme had to be carefully planned to ensure the refurbishment was completed safely and efficiently without impacting the school's reopening.

Working across multiple teaching areas and communal spaces required the replacement of more than 300 light fittings, ranging from Scholar fittings and recessed ceiling tile panels through to bulkhead fittings, battens and various emergency lighting.

Particular planning was also required within the school's main hall, where the lighting was installed at high level. Mobile scaffold towers were erected to provide safe access, allowing the light fittings to be replaced efficiently whilst maintaining safe working practices throughout the project.

Thanks to careful organisation and efficient project management, the entire refurbishment was completed in just three and a half weeks, allowing ample time for final inspection, testing and commissioning before the return of staff and pupils.

The Results

The completed refurbishment has transformed the school's lighting installation, providing brighter, more uniform lighting throughout classrooms, corridors and communal areas while significantly improving energy efficiency.

The new LED lighting reduces ongoing maintenance requirements and operating costs, while the replacement emergency lighting ensures the school continues to benefit from a safe and compliant emergency lighting system. By completing the project well within the available holiday period, the school was able to reopen on schedule with no disruption to teaching or day to day operations.
