SCHOOL LIBRARY ELECTRICAL INSTALLATION

Education Sector • South Shields

Project Overview

Same Electricals Limited was appointed to undertake the complete electrical installation for a new purpose-built school library, delivering the project from first fix through to final testing and commissioning.

Working alongside the principal contractor, we installed a modern, energy-efficient electrical system designed to provide a safe, reliable and comfortable learning environment for pupils and staff. The installation included a new three-phase distribution board, dedicated sub-main supply, single-phase consumer unit, power, LED lighting, emergency lighting, infrared heating throughout the building and a dedicated data installation linking the new building back to the school's existing network system.

Following completion, the installation was fully inspected, tested and certified in accordance with BS 7671 Wiring Regulations before being handed over to the client.

Project Brief

The project formed part of a new school development, requiring a complete electrical installation for a standalone library building. The system needed to provide reliable power distribution, efficient LED lighting, emergency lighting and heating while integrating seamlessly with the school's existing electrical infrastructure.

As the building was intended for daily educational use, the installation had to be completed to a high standard with long-term reliability, ease of maintenance and electrical safety as key priorities. The main scope of works was:

  • Installation of a new Schneider three-phase distribution board replacing the existing local supply.
  • New single-phase sub-main supplying the library building.
  • Installation of a data supply linking the library to the schools existing server and network.
  • Installation of a Hager consumer unit with AFDD protection for the timber construction library.
  • Radial socket circuit serving the library and intervention spaces.
  • Dedicated heating circuit for three infrared panels within the main library.
  • Dedicated heating circuit for a single infrared panel for the intervention room.
  • LED lighting installation throughout.
  • Emergency lighting installation.
  • Full inspection, testing and certification.
  • Electrical commissioning and client handover.

Project Challenges

One of the key elements of this project was upgrading the school's existing electrical infrastructure to provide sufficient capacity for the new library building. The existing local three-phase distribution board had reached its practical capacity and, together with a number of minor observations identified during our assessment, it was decided that replacement was the most appropriate long-term solution.

To minimise disruption to the school's day to day operations, the replacement of the three-phase distribution board and installation of the new sub-main supplying the library were carefully programmed during the school holidays. This allowed the necessary electrical shutdowns to be completed while the school was unoccupied, avoiding any impact on staff, pupils or teaching activities.

In addition to the electrical installation the project required a dedicated data connection between the new library building and the school's main server infrastructure. This involved installing approximately 50mtrs of a cable basket dedicated to the data supply and an overall cable run of approximately 80mtrs back to the server location to provide reliable connectivity throughout the new building. Careful planning and coordination with the schools I.T department ensured both the electrical and data installations were completed efficiently and fully integrated before final handover.

The Results

The completed library now benefits from a modern electrical installation tailored specifically to the requirements of an educational environment. From first fix wiring and containment through to the finished lighting, heating and distribution equipment, every stage of the installation was completed to the highest standard before comprehensive testing and certification.

The result is a bright, energy-efficient learning space supported by a robust electrical infrastructure, providing reliable performance, enhanced safety and simplified future maintenance. AFDD protection was incorporated to provide enhanced protection against electrical fires, while energy-efficient LED lighting and infrared heating were selected to reduce long-term operating costs and improve occupant comfort.

The completed installation provides a safe, compliant and reliable electrical system designed to support the school's needs for many years to come.
