Project Overview

Same Electricals Limited undertook this project which involved the design, installation and commissioning of a complete SolaX solar PV and battery storage system for a domestic property in Sunderland. The client wanted to reduce their reliance on the grid, maximise self consumption of the electricity generated by the solar array and future proof their home against rising energy costs.

The installation comprised a roof-mounted solar PV array comprising of 10x 450w bi-facial solar panels, a SolaX G4 hybrid inverter and SolaX Triple Power battery storage system, allowing excess solar energy to be stored for use during the evening and periods of lower generation. Every aspect of the installation was completed in accordance with BS7671, with particular attention given to the quality of the roof installation, cable management and long-term reliability.

Project Brief

The property featured a traditional Rosemary tiled roof, requiring a mounting system specifically designed for this roof type. The objective was to install the solar array without compromising the weatherproof integrity of the roof while achieving a clean, symmetrical appearance.

Internally, the client wanted the inverter and battery installation to be positioned neatly within the utility room, providing easy access for maintenance and complying with current best practises. The installation was designed to maximise safety through careful equipment layout, dedicated isolation points, surge protection and fire rated backing boards being installed at the inverter and battery location. The installation included: 

  • Design and installation of a roof mounted 10 panel solar PV array providing 4.5kW of solar generation.
  • Installation of a roof mounted system using Rosemary roof hooks and purpose made hook rest replacement tiles to provide protection to the Rosemary tiled roof.
  • Installation of suitable mounting rails and all associated fixings.
  • Installation of PV Ultra between the array and inverter for a neat and tidy DC string installation.
  • Installation and commissioning of a SolaX G4 hybrid inverter.
  • Installation of a SolaX Triple Power 5.8kWh battery storage system.
  • Installation of AC and DC isolation, DC surge protection and all required warning labels.
  • Mounting all internal equipment onto cement fibre backing boards to provide a non-combustible mounting surface and enhanced fire protection.
  • Full inspection, testing and commissioning of the installation prior to handover.

Project Challenges

Unlike many modern concrete tile roofs, Rosemary tiles require additional care during installation to prevent damage and maintain the roof's weather resistance. To achieve this, purpose designed Hookrest tiles were installed wherever roof hooks were required. This method removes the need to excessively notch existing tiles, resulting in a stronger, neater and more weather-resistant installation.

Particular attention was also given to the internal installation. All equipment was mounted on cement fibre backing boards, with neatly routed cabling, clearly labelled isolation points and sufficient working clearances around the inverter and battery system. The result is an installation that is not only compliant with current standards but also easy to maintain and visually clean.

The Results

The completed installation provides our client with a modern renewable energy system capable of generating clean electricity throughout the day while storing surplus generation within the battery for use during the evening and overnight.

The finished roof installation sits neatly within the existing roofline, with all black solar panels complementing the property's appearance and the suitably installed roof mounting system preserving the integrity of the Rosemary tiled roof. Internally, the SolaX inverter and battery system delivers a tidy, serviceable installation that has been fully inspected, tested and commissioned, ensuring safe, reliable operation for many years to come.
