Same Electricals Limited was originally tasked to undertake a Solar Photovoltaic Inspection Report (SPIR) to our clients domestic property in Whitburn.

The existing installation was originally installed almost 15 years ago and has since had replacement inverters and batteries installed previously. This installation had signs of poor workmanship and had developed several issues that prevented the system from operating safely and efficiently. Following a comprehensive inspection and fault-finding process, we designed and carried out a complete remedial solution, upgrading the installation with a modern SolaX hybrid inverter and battery system while bringing the installation back in line with current standards.

Project Brief

The client contacted Same Electricals Limited following concerns regarding the performance and reliability of their existing solar PV installation. A detailed Solar PV Inspection Report (SPIR) identified a number of issues affecting both the safety and operation of the system. These included poor workmanship, non-compliant equipment locations and compatibility issues preventing the battery storage system from communicating correctly with the inverter which was causing issues throughout the system.

Following the inspection, we were instructed to design and implement a complete remedial solution that would restore reliable operation while future-proofing the installation with modern hybrid battery storage technology. The scope of works included:

  • Detailed Solar PV Inspection Report (SPIR), including Thermal imaging of solar array.
  • Diagnosis of inverter and battery communication faults.
  • Installation of a new SolaX hybrid inverter.
  • Installation of a new SolaX battery storage system.
  • Installation of DC surge protection.
  • Relocation of the inverter and battery from the loft to an external sheltered location.
  • Bonding of the solar panel mounting rails.
  • Full inspection, testing and commissioning.
  • Electrical certification and client handover.

Project Challenges

During our initial inspection, several concerns were identified with the existing installation. The battery management system (BMS) was unable to communicate correctly with the inverter due to incompatible equipment having previously been installed. As a result, the battery repeatedly generated communication faults and was unable to operate as intended. 

​As part of the inspection, the entire solar array was surveyed using thermal imaging to identify any defective modules or abnormal heating. Considering the array was approaching 15 years of service, only normal age-related degradation was observed, with no excessive hotspots or defects requiring replacement. However, electrical testing identified induced voltage present on the solar panel mounting rails caused by capacitive coupling from the PV array. Although this phenomenon is relatively common, the mounting system had not been correctly bonded which was cause of concern. Appropriate bonding was therefore installed to ensure the mounting framework was bonded and complied with current installation requirements.

A further concern was the location of the existing inverter and battery equipment within the loft space. In addition to presenting difficulties for future maintenance, the location is no longer best practice and is actively advised against. The complete system was therefore relocated to a sheltered external position using PV Ultra & EV Ultra cables, significantly improving accessibility, ventilation and long-term serviceability.

The Results

The completed remedial works restored the solar PV installation to full operational performance while significantly improving both safety and reliability. the client now benefits from a fully functional renewable energy system capable of maximising self-generated electricity while providing dependable long term operation.

The original inverter and incompatible battery equipment were replaced with a new SolaX hybrid inverter and battery storage system, allowing seamless communication between the inverter and battery management system while providing intelligent energy management for the property while also offering app connectivity.

The relocation of the equipment from the loft to an external sheltered location not only improved accessibility for future servicing but also brought the installation in line with current installation standards. Following completion, the entire installation was fully tested, commissioned and configured to ensure safe operation and optimum system performance.
