The consumer unit/fusebox is the center of your power supply for your home. In simple terms consumer units typically contain miniature circuit breakers (MCBs or Breakers) or fuses which serve each circuit and protects you, your family and your home from fires, electric shock, burns or worse in the event of an electrical fault.

As of the 18th edition ammendment 2 : 2022 wiring regulations, your house should be protected by Type A RCDs rated to 30mA and a surge protection device (SPD) should also be fitted which is designed to protect against damage to your electronics, appliances and property in the event of power surges and lightning strikes. We highly recommend renewing older installs i.e. Rewireable fuseboxes, single/non RCD protected boards etc., which may no-longer meet British safety standards as these mostly unnoticed, unassuming boxes have a huge part to play in the everyday safety of your home, your family and your possessions.

The main benefit of having protection provided by a RCBO breaker is convenience, these types of breakers have a RCD built into them so if a fault arises only the affected circuit will disconnect and all other circuits will be in full working order preventing nuisance tripping.
